Common Uncommon Syndrome

The other day I had a thought–

Perhaps it’s just me, but it seems we only have affinity for the common man when he is uncommon. Let’s call it ‘Common Uncommon Syndrome’ (yes, i am very creative). What do I mean?

Picture being in a foreign country with people that speak a different language or perhaps look different than you. If you, perchance, stumble upon someone from your own country, do you not feel an unexplained gush of excitement and perhaps strong bond? It’s almost like you had known them forever! However, if you met that same person in your own home country, i doubt you would feel those same emotions… perhaps you and that person would be naught but strangers–indifferent to each other.

Thus, ‘Common Uncommon Syndrome,’ can be formalized as follows: The sudden ease and camaraderie one feels upon meeting someone of common background in a foreign place; feelings that otherwise would not be felt in one’s typical locale.

It appears easy to feel connected when we are commonly uncommon. Once we return to being just common, we suddenly try to make ourselves uncommon to one another.

Just a thought.
